In this life change is the only constant.
People come and go. Sites go up, change servers, and get taken down. Bookmarks and favorites a like get lost, deleted and/or forgotten. The places we frequented, the people that we meet through various means of communication get shuffled into the deck that is called life... some resurface, others dont.
Yet its the memories and the connections that were made always seem to stay with us. We reflect on them either consciously or unconsciously. Pondering the good times and at bad.
I remember when this board was the mere gleam in some nerds eye. When the bulk of this community use to frequent a little message board known as LUE (Life the Universe and Everything) off of the GameFAQ's website:
I recall the owner CJayC first creating said message board and giving it board number '42' Little did he know of the implications that would cause. Realizing the monster that he, CJayC, created he knew the only way to deal with a board of that size (the largest board on the site NOT having to do with an actual video game) was to water it down and sever it where it hurt: Invite only and limited post-able content. The community would not stand for this. From LUE spat many spin off boards. Each fighting for their little piece of the internet. Thus 404 was born, and it was good.
I remember when 404 Error was in it's infancy. So many members, so many posts. I recall when threads got so big that they needed their own individual boards. Thus the staple board sub categories were needed: Intellectual Discussion, Music, Gaming and of course, my personal favorite, the Creativity boards were all made. The boards thrived and 404 was a happy place back then, until the board wars were started.
When LUE was disbanded LUE'sers were in dire need of places to go where they could vent, discuss or post funny pics that they found in the trivials on the internets. Some individuals found s places where they could call home, other's found opportunities to troll. Boards such as KessNet, EO and many others were filled with members of various boards flaming and trolling top staff members and incising others to join their boards. For a while it was chaos. Forums were hacked, redirected and taken down SEVERAL times a week. even with the banhammer rained down on hundreds of IP's this was still a problem. A solution was needed:
Then out of seemingly nowhere 404 and EO decided not to flame, hack, and toll one another but instead have a 'friendly' compilation. Members of both boards organised and competed in various contests and the descendants of LUE were once again happy. This rivalry of sorts caused a goth in the community, and it was good.
Then Justin announced that change was coming. Something that would effectively kill what we all knew and loved to be 404. 404 Error was in its last days, 'GameDaily' Daily was here..
The rest of the story is a blur. Many outraged users disbanded and and started (even more) 404 Error spin off sites. Most are dead or dying. LUE links was found, but remains the butt of a many jokes.
We 'Errors' as we were once called are few in numbers. Most have moved on, grown up, or past away. I know that I, for a long time, moved on. I still keep in touch with a few of the Errors that once use to frequent this one great forum. I miss everyone and the talks we use to share. I still have this board bookmarked and often lurk here once in a while. There are too many fond memories with the forum not to...
Long live 404 Error
PS: Sorry about the grammar and spelling in advance, its late and I'm at work.
