Ok so I'm looking at getting a good gaming laptop. I would like to play Oblivion and I can get into FPS and RTS games alot too so keep that in mind when you're looking at this. I've never been much of a big-time pc gamer so I'm not exactly up to par on graphics card standards and such.
But here is what I'm looking at right now. Toshiba is having a sale (20% off) on select customized laptops until May 1st. So they quote this system at a retail of 2000 some dollars but since there is a sale its only $1623.00
Toshiba Satellite P300-ST3014
CPU: Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T9300 (2.5GHz, 6MB L2, 800MHz FSB)
Operating System: Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium 32-Bit
Memory: 4096MB PC5300 DDR2 667MHz SDRAM (2048MBx2)
LCD: 17.0" Diagonal Widescreen WXGA+ TruBrite® display (1440x900)
Graphics Controller: ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 3650 with 512MB DDR2 discrete memory
+ up to 255MB allocated shared graphics memory
HDD: 120GB HDD (5400rpm, Serial-ATA)
Optical Media: DVD SuperMulti (DVD SuperMulti (+/-R double layer) with Labelflash™ drive
Mini-PCI/WiFi: Intel® Wireless WiFi Link 4965 AGN (802.11a/g/n)
Bluetooth: Bluetooth® Version 2.1 +EDR
Battery: Lithium Ion battery (6-Cell, 4000mAh)
All this for $1623.00
So is this a good deal? Is there a better option out there for close to the same price range? Will I be able to play some high end games such as Oblivion... I'd appreciate your opinions. Thanks

that's decent enough, but gateway sells a model with a mobile 8800 which curbstomps that hd3850, but with a weaker cpu (t5450 or something) for like $1300 or something.

I'd try and get a 7200 RPM HDD. Just make sure you keep you laptop propped in the back so it can ventilate well.

Cheaper and a bit worse: ($900 or so)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16834220286Cheaper and far better: ($1200)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16834220308Also Dell XPS laptops can do really well for under or around $1000 - 2.0ghz+, 3gb ram, 256 dedicated video memory, 160gb+ HD, etc.
The Gateway he's talking about is the FX line, which has a 1.67ghz processor 3gb ram 250gb HDD 8800GT 512mb video card laptop for $1350, you can find it on sale at retail places for $1200. I personally think the asus is your best bet. Keep in mind gaming laptop=more easily movable gaming desktop because battery life will be an hour at best when gaming.

If that mobile 9500 is any good, then yeah the asus is the best of the bunch.

Damn that Asus looks pretty good! And I guess I was confusing Asus for Acer in my head. So just to make sure...Asus is a pretty good brand? It has a 2 year warranty, don't want it to give me shit on 2 years and 1 day. haha.
Thanks for the help so far guys.

Just to warn you, any gaming laptop is going to go obsolete on you much faster than a desktop will. I understand if that's not really an option, but you are much better off with a $1000 gaming desktop and a cheap laptop with high battery life.

Just to follow up on this.
I actually went ahead and bought this :
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16834220308 (The $1200 one)
I got it...no shit 25 hours after ordering. No complaints thus far. It runs Call of Duty 4 without effort. I can Alt-Tab out of that game instantly, compared to some games where the system will lock up a bit. It also runs Oblivion with the settings all the way up, which is what I was shooting for. It looks like a good buy so far and I hope it'll last me awhile. Thanks Auron for the link and thanks everyone else for your input.

Good luck with it, and keep it well guarded from kids and thieves. Those things tend to disappear as often as they break.
