Never ever go into telemarketing. This is the worst job on the entire planet. Forget backbreaking labor. Forget cleaning toilets. Telemarketing is the worst god damn job on the planet. No one wins out of it except a couple of rich pieces of shit that don't need money anyway. Both people on both ends of the line are getting fucked up the ass. People get bothered in their homes and scream at people for doing their job - which is to bother people at their homes. Which I doubt anyone with a soul feels good about.
I am telemarketing this week while I can't work at my regular job (I am working at the same place I worked about half . I fucking hate it. I fucking hate the atmosphere of false encouragement... "I know you can do it! But if you don't... you're letting everyone down." They actually created this phony bonus system this week (THIS WEEK ONLY! WOWIE!). If you get 10 sales this week, you get an extra $250. But that is only if the shift totals 200 sales this week. Apparently their best is 175 and average is 150, so it doesn't seem unrealistic but isn't going to happen.
Why? 12 sales today. RIGHT UP THERE, EH? So if I went in there and got 10 sales, good for me. It'd essentially make me hate everyone for not making it way further. Because there is no way in fucking hell they will make 200 sales. Even if I was the best at sucking the money out of people's wallets into a useless piece of shit "free" Las Vegas vacation that costs $50.
Let's say no one gets pissed at me for bugging them at their home. Let's just say it. I say the same thing over 40 times an hour and NO one wants to hear it. And I hear from the boss that I am doing a good job because it's his job to fill you with bullshit positivity. Because positivity sells. And sales mean he gets paid. And the fact he gets paid means the company must have gotten paid. The millionaire owner is a slimy piece of crap with two houses 9one in Michigan, one in Arizona), smiles from ear to ear and talks in the most condescending, sales-guy tone possible every moment he is visible.
This is the WORST fucking job. Period. If you have any morals, if you have any dignity, if you are creative, or if you are just human in some way, NEVER work in a telemarketing firm.

How do they make this atmosphere? I've always been curious how people put up with these jobs.
As for your recommendation of doing it or not, well I believe the saying "Death before dishonor" applies.

I think you are right, I would rather clean toilets. It takes someone with no soul to be a telemarketer.

I don't know, man. I haven't worked in there for 6 months. I worked it for 2-3 months earlier this year. I spent 4 hours in there and seriously felt suicidal. There is someone who has been there for 3 years in there. I don't know how anyone can put up with that shit. I really don't.

If there was a toilet cleaning job open for a week, I'd be there like CRAZY.

meh if you have the mondset telemarketing makes great cash, but yeah, it's all bullshit. Atleast selling to homeowners is. Now telemarketing businesses...that's a great job!
But yeah, I burned out on telemarketing, that's why I started my own thing.

Because they'll hire fast where most places weren't. It's an easy job for people like pregnant women, old ladies, people like that as well.
I worked as one for the Muscular Dystrophy Association for 3 days and got fired for not being a "team player." Bullshit excuse. It isn't a team environment, you sit in a cubicle and make calls. They were just mad I didn't get any sales because I was calling people who had already been called about 5 times already.

I simply just hang up when I know it's a telemarketer.
On the other hand, I enjoy messing with religious people that come knocking at my door.
