I'm realizing I'm about to graduate college and no longer have access to dozens of terabytes of media at incredible speed. My plan is to build a file server and full it with pretty much everything I can get my dirty little hands on, especially since the $/GB is getting better and better. I want to build a file server, but I'm not really sure what would be a good setup.

I have an old computer with a bunch of shot compontents, so I'm going to use that case (it's got lots of room for hard drives) and that power supply (600w I believe). I did a bit of looking on newegg and came up with this setup:

Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx...N82E16813128076
CPU: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx...N82E16819116040
RAM: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx...N82E16820161677
2x Hard Drives: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx...N82E16822148298

I have a 250gb sata 1.5gb/s that i'll use for the OS and transfer space. Any recommendations or suggestions? Especially any to help me save money.

I don't see any problems with that setup. Just google the board name around some of the lower ones are iffy (according to a friend).

If you need to cut corners, I'd say just use 1GB of RAM in one stick.

I'd spend the extra $1.01 and get this RAM

It has free shipping, the one you linked doesn't...that's why this one is only $1.01 more expensive.

Actually...if you don't mind mail-in rebates...these are both better...and cheaper than the one you picked.

eh its a file server the bottlenecks will be at the HDDs and network port.

Oh minor problem with that mobo is no built in gigabit lan.

I wasn't talking about bottlenecking or anything. Higher quality RAM is worth $1 more. Or if he got the ones with mail-in rebates...it's actually cheaper than the one he chose.

I think I'll go with the free shipping ram, since i hate mail-in rebates.

I didn't even notice it didn't have gigabit lan, this one looks good instead:
