Full Version: So...what's everyone doing with their HD-DVDs?

I bought the 360 add-on and have a collection of around 7-8 HD-DVDs, all movies I really like. I'm torn right now between selling it all while it still has some value, and keeping it because I really really like HD movies. I know that I won't be buying a standalone Blu-Ray player, and I know I won't be buying a PS3 for at least another year. I'm not sure if I can go without hi-def movies for a year or more, but at the same time I'm worried that HD-DVD players and the discs themselves will be worthless in terms of resale value in a year's time.

Obviously even with the format being dead the discs and players don't stop working, but I don't like the idea of having a small subset of movies that will probably stop seeing new releases in the next 6 months.

What's everyone else doing with their HD-DVD stuff now that the war is essentially over?
brandotron
I say keep them and enjoy them. It'll be like beta in a few years. People will be all "oh wow you've got hd dvds i remember those" and it'll be fun. If you sell them you'll just have a relatively small amount of cash that will be gone just as quickly as it came.
Grimes
If you like the movies and don't plan on getting Blu-Ray, you might as well keep them. You can still enjoy them on the 360. And what cheeseass said.
Trogdor the Burninator
Shoving them up my ass because I wasn't dumb enough to buy either format.

XD.gif

I didn't buy either format, myself. I thought the two would co-exist...but I'm afraid not.

I don't even know the fucking difference between them.

I say keep it and sell it on ebay in the future (where some nut who wants some rare device will buy it).

True, I'm leaning towards keeping them I guess. I am planning on getting Blu-Ray though (a PS3), just not for another year or so. I was going to wait fro the PSThree but Blu-Ray might change my mind to get it earlier.

Yeah but I'm not sure the value is going to increase any more. I can get $100 for the player and $10-15 for each disc right now. Will it be much more 5-10 years from now when it's "rare"?

There are slight differences between the two formats, but they are primarily the same. But that was exactly the case with VHS and Beta, too. It's just that each format was developed by a different company who both have quite the financial stake in the success of their respective formats; and it's also inevitable that one will win out over the other. Consumers do not want to buy two different players for what is essentially the same medium, just coming from different film studios.

Most electronics depreciate. I looked on ebay for Betamax and you can get one for 60 bucks.

I'm still buying regular DVDs, so nothing. I'LL STAY IN THE STONEAGE AND LIKE IT THANK YOU VERY MUCH

I'll start buying blu-ray when I can go into Best Buy or Wal-Mart or whatever, and find that the blu-ray section is of equal size to DVDs, or at least close.
Paraphen
It's not like you're going to be ditching your HD-DVD player since you, assumably, want to still have an XBox 360, so there's really not a lot of reason to get rid of them
jachimabad
Yeah, I'd say just keep them and keep enyoying them for now.
Da Bears
I don't even own one HD-Dvd or blue ray....

The HD-DVD player is separate from the 360. It's an add-on, so I can sell it without losing my ability to play 360 games.

How much better would a 1920x1080 resolution be over 640x480?
Feern
I remember when dvds came out and my dad was all like "What the fuck is this shit" and wanted to stay with vhs. (Do you need a hd tv to play hd-dvd and blueray players?, Sounds like a stupid question).

He is gonna be pissed when he finds out he needs a new tv and a new movie player in the next few years.

Frankly I think dvds are good enough. HD really doesn't look all that better, imo. The differences between dvd and vhs is a lot different than hd and dvd. Whenever I get a ps3, if I get a ps3, I'll have a blueray gay ass player, so whatever.

isn't it more like 700x1200 (or whatever it is) compared to 1920x1080?

If you honestly can't see the blatantly obvious difference between HD and SD you need to get glasses. That's one of the most absurd statements I've ever heard.

I've seen both, the difference is noticeable, but in my opinion, pretty minor. You always flip out about shit like this. Damn boy.
Trogdor the Burninator
It is very minor, DVD's on my HD television compared to HD-DVD's (never saw Blu-Ray but it's probably the same dumb shit) look pretty much the same.

laugh.gif and I guess a PC game at 1024 x 768 looks the same as the same game at 1920 x 1200, or that Xbox 360 games look the same on an SDTV as they do on an HDTV, right? Wow, I wish I could live in the same world as you guys. I could stick with my 10 year old SDTV, my 128 kbs mp3s, and my VCR and be happy.

Just out of curiosity, are you guys using Vizios and Westinghouses to make your comparisons?

You say that all the time when I never flip out. I think you confuse any argument I make with "flipping out". I don't give a shit about it, I just think it's hilarious that you would try to claim that there's very little difference between standard and high definition video.
lumabean
There is obviously a difference but that difference doesn't matter to me at least.

Exactly, and to some people it won't. It's the same reason why people are content drinking $5 wine or Natty Light, or listening to 128 kbs iTunes mp3s. A lot of people don't give a shit, but to deny that the difference is there is just strange.

I suppose you'll believe whatever their marketers want you to.

And I bet that the step from DVD to HD-DVD is insignificant compared to the step from VHS to DVD.

Yes, basic image resolution technology that a 1st grader can understand is a "marketing ploy". Oh god, how they've deceived us all. They're so tricky, those bastards.

Don't you realize that companies would much rather that you buy DVDs and not HD-DVD/Blu-ray? They make waaaay more money on DVDs right now, so why would they try to "deceive" me into thinking HD is better?

Actually, they're pretty much the same. DVD has (theoretically) about twice as many lines of resolution as VHS, as does HD when compared to SD DVD.

What's the difference between games and movies when it comes to the jump between SD and HD?

HD-DVD is officially dead.

Toshiba even announced it on TV in Japan.

Well I notice the difference but only on certain things.

I have 300 on blu ray (1080p). It was great to watch but watching the bourne identity (DVD) on my upscaling dvd player (1080i), the quality was not vastly noticeable, it looked great.

Then I put the simpsons movie blu ray on........ WOAH. A-frigging-mazing. It really depends on what you're actually watching.

Yeah it definitely also depends on the source and the size of your TV as well as how far away you're sitting from it. The bigger your TV, the more likely you are to notice the details that are simply missing from an upscaled DVD due to the lack of pixels.
Sol
Yeah, you need like a 50+ inch HDTV in order to easily notice the difference between an upscaled DVD and a 1080p blu ray movie. That's just one factor, another is that the movie was a good encode. There are some HD-DVD/Blu Ray movies that were encoded terribly, and looked worse than DVDs.

I'd say 40+ inch, at least in my experience (I own a 40" TV), but yeah there are some pretty terrible HD-DVD/Blu Ray encodes.
Shocka
Now I'll wait till the price drops.......will it drop?....it better drop or I'm not buying crap.
