I saw the movie on Thursday and I found it rather humorous. I also love the main character Juno, she had such a quirky personality.

I totally wanna see this and everyone thinks I'm stupid.

It looks pretty awesome. I'm a huge Arrested Development fan (as everyone else should be) so having both Bateman and Cera in there is a huge draw. Throw in Dwight from The Office and a quirky/cute star and it sounds like a winner.

as a wes anderson fan i have to say this looks insufferably quirky
Zombie N-Word
I thought it was pretty funny. I loved the fact that you go from loving Bateman/hating Garner to hating Bateman & loving Garner near the end of the film.

The dialog and camerawork were easily the best parts of the film, but Juno was a cool character. The best thing about her was the fact that she didn't try and act like she was original and out there, she even acknowledged that she fit a pretty broad stereotype, which I thought was nice.

Also: People have been claiming that Diablo Cody ripped off a Korean flick called Jenny, Juno to make Juno, but from what I've read that doesn't really seem true. I'm going to watch it to see if I spot any similarities besides the same basic situation and title.
lumabean
Self involved and terribly insufferable.
Zombie N-Word
Yeah, I don't see how people can think Diablo Cody ripped off that Korean movie, the two films are NOTHING alike except for the teen pregnancy and a character named Juno.

Looks really whack. "Indie" comedies are usually not comical and up their own asses.

It's totally Jeni, Juno. and here's the video on youtube (part 1/10): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CStdbG_U8yY

I've seen both. As you said the only similarity is that a young woman gets pregnant.

What constitutes an "indie" comedy? Something like Little Miss Sunshine? Because that was hilarious.

I haven't found any of Wes Anderson's films comedic.

What I've been telling my friends is if you liked 'Napoloeon Dynamite'/ 'Eagle vs. Shark', you'll like Juno.
Scorched Earth Policy
My sisters dragged me to it today, we all ended up hating it. The dialogue was awful, the comedic parts were bad and the scenes meant to be touching and dramatic were so phoney considering how cartoony Juno was.

There is nothing here comparable to Wes Anderson's films or his directing style, like mentioned previously this is more akin to Napoleon Dynamite.
Loveless Aardvark
I hated Napoleon Dynamite.

I only watched about ten minutes of Napolean Dynamite, and hated it, but these movies don't really seem alike.
moscas
I'm seeing it tomorrow night. I'm not expecting some amazing transcendent film or something. I just want some entertainment.
Zebrahead

Indie "comedy" =/= real comedy
Ender Wiggin
I didn't really like Napoleon Dynamite (well, not after the 1st time anyway) but loved this movie. I wouldn't say they're anything alike at all.

Because the scripts of independent or low-budget films aren't allowed to be humerous? There's some innate quality about them that sucks out anything funny? I guess I forgot that it's impossible for a non-mainstream movie to be hilarious.
Scorched Earth Policy
Well its not really like Napoleon Dynamite because Juno is loaded with so many stupid one liners and tries to turn itself into a semi serious drama later in the movie where Napoleon Dynamite never had such lofty pretensions. Juno is just such a dumb and over written character for the sake of making her seem quirky, like with her eating lunch in her school's trophy case.

Maybe a more accurate description would be if Judd Apatow collided with Napoleon Dynamite in an explosion of failure while doing the whole Little Miss Sunshine thing where EVERY character has an oh so odd yet interesting quirk except this movie is even worse than that movie some how. I didn't even think Thank YOu for Smoking was that bad but Jason Reitman really churned out a piece of shit here but it seems like a good chunk of the blame goes towards the woman who wrote the screenplay, Diabolo Cody, whos pen name tells pretty much everything you need to know about her.
moscas
I think I would have liked it more if the preview didn't give everything away. The funniest parts were already overdone when I saw them.
Keats
I really liked it. I see Zebra's point about indie comedy - I think these days it means almost sincere irony, if that makes any sense?

Pretty much take everything SEP said and make it positive, and you've got my feelings on the movie.

Though I don't see any similarities to Napoleon Dynamite.
moscas
It's not that "indie" if they can afford to pay Jennifer Garner.

I enjoyed it. It was cute.

Napoleon Dynamite was funny once

Little Miss Sunshine isn't funny
lolnard copenhagen
wes anderson's movies aren't really "indie comedy", though
Trogdor the Burninator
you guys suck, my favorite movie of the year easily. no similarities to Napoleon Dynamite, no clue how you could make that comparison. Also, you're dumb if you don't like The Royal Tenenbaums.

Because she took a giant pay cut to be in the movie? The budget for the film was supposedly $2.5 thats microscopic considering how much money people dump into movie productions today. Garner isn't exactly as expensive of a commodity as she was years ago either.

It's not like the movie would have done any better with more money dumped into it. I guess proportionally, Garner (probably) got the most pay.

Probably, but I bet Cera got a nice chunk of change too. I wouldn't say he's a hot commodity but he was definitely a draw for the movie.

No, it's because most of them just suck ass.

That's not to say mainstream comedy can't be worse. For instance, I watched The Life Aquatic in its entirety even though the only scene I thought was remotely funny was Bill Murray dancing to the Casio Keyboard, but I walked out on Walk Hard after 15 minutes.

My perception of real comedy just isn't what I get from Wes Anderson and all these other indie attempts - i.e. the ability to make you laugh your ass off instead of just smirk and say "ohhhh hey, I get it...heh heh."
Tiz
Aside from Bottle Rocket and Rushmore I'm finding it harder and harder to understand what makes Wes Anderson a director of comedies and not a director of dramas. I don't go to Wes Anderson movies because he makes me laugh, I go because I like well-made adventure/drama films that are capable of having a sense of both humor and tragedy, and I love the film worlds he creates.

People seem to interpret him as smug but, especially after something like The Darjeeling Limited, which literalizes symbols as the film goes along [the characters leave emotional baggage behind as they actually leave behind their fucking luggage for god's sake], I don't see how he can be thought of as smug. The characters in his films wear their emotions on their sleeves, and so does Anderson; they're not trying to be "clever" [and when they are they're generally poked fun at] and I don't think he is either.
The President
The darjeeling limited was fucking smug and you know it
Scorched Earth Policy
Wes Anderson is a pretentious douchebag but I agree with Tiz on how he doesn't make comedies, he makes dramas based around bourgeois angst and with characters defined by their funny looking and bright colored clothes that can be mistaken with some comedic elements that might seem more comedic than they should be because of all the bad acting in his films. Naturally his films appeal to people who grew up in upper middle class environments that the kind of characters in his movies have, and because they have silver spoons up their asses their main dilemnas in life are spiritual and emotional matters. I can see how people interpret that as deep or complex but it seems immature and shallow to me, just like in a lifestyle where everything is handed to you.

Actually tiz all the characters you seem interpret as "wearing their emotions on their sleeves" when basically these characters are of these sorts of circumstance and are just emotionally immature and unstable. You've confused this with the trait "wearing your emotions on your sleeves" which is more of a sympton of one being secure with one's self and certain degree of honesty.

Cera is barely in it, and Dwight is basically a cameo. Bateman never actually interacts with Cera, either.

Anyway, I thought it was pretty good. I don't see how anyone is getting Napoleon Dynamite from it, though...this movie actually had a plot and wasn't based on being "OMG RANDOM AND RETARDED LULZ!" The only similarity I could find was the soundtrack on both films were acoustic indie rock songs.
Brent Black
This movie was fucking terrible. I don't understand why people are getting so up on its nuts. The dialog was annoying as hell, the plot was utterly pointless, and it was trying so hard to be 'indie' that it was almost unwatchable.

Fuck anybody who likes this shit. Watch a real movie.

Yeah that disappointed me. Still liked the movie a lot though, I'm glad it's getting the praise it deserves.
LifeofX
Wes's best and funniest is Rushmore. I enjoyed TRT and LAWSZ but they never really made me laugh
Usurper
I finally saw it last night, and I can't complain. The dialog made me smile, and the characters were generally believable. Some of the one-liners were a bit cheesy (Like the etch-a-sketch joke), but it wasn't enough to bother me.

If you don't like this movie, you're trying too hard to NOT like it.

Or you could not enjoy it for legitimate reasons like the characters, goofy dialoge, story, direction, and the cheesey mis en scene of the movie. I guess me and my siblings who went in with a good expectations and were disappointed with it were just trying to not like it? huh.gif
