Wouldn't it be weird to hear yourself singing?
Poopington
I have three friends that are rappers and they all do. And listen to eachother as well.

What I wonder is if sometimes artists look at their art and masturbate in self-satisfaction.

Actually, come to think of it, I saw a documentary on Robert Crumb a few weeks back, and he did/does.

Yeah. That was a crazy fucking movie. It was called Crumb. He and his family are so incredibly weird.

I've made a shit ton of music and I do not listen to any of it most of the time. Sometimes I will pop it in for some nostalgia, but I don't perform any of it live so I have no reason to listen to it enough to know any of it.

But I am not a real musician, either.
LifeofX
I always hate anything i make so i never listen to it
The Batman

If it counts, I read my own posts for entertainment, since they're the only worthwhile posts here. :-o

My friend makes techno music and listens to it for entertainment.

Then again, techno is totally different than more conventional music.

Except it's not.

In the sense that techno doesn't usually have lyrics, sure it is. The original post was about hearing yourself singing.

I'm confused. Listening/reading/admiring your own work makes you an asshole?

In all seriousness, I know a lot of people who listen to and admire their own music. If they're not boasting about it, that's okay with me.

Well, listening to yoour own shit for entertainment seems pretty fucking weird and self centered to me. I don't sit there and admire my own art and talk about how great it is. Music/art is mroe of something you just fucking do... because you were born with some taloent and you get restless without creative outlets. Its entertainment for everyone else, but for you its personal expression. It seems strange that someone would enjoy anything as entertainment, when they put a lot of work and 'heart' into it and probably had to hear it over and over again for editing and then again at shows and practice.

But you know, I mean like REAL musicians... who are good at playing instruments and practice/make music at least semi regularly and/or are in school for composition and shit. Not your cousin whos a fucking rapper(different kind of thing than mastering and instrument entirely) and really fucking proud of himself cuz it make shim feel cool.

But you count yourself in that category as proof negative? You've mastered whatever your art is?

I don't think artists can all be lumped into the category of people who need to express their selves, nor do I think that needing to express yourself means that you don't enjoy looking back on what you've done.

Not to mention the fact that listening back on your music doesn't mean you're only doing it for entertainment. The guys I know don't only listen to other music for entertainment, I don't know why they would only their own.

And two of them are in school for musical stuff. Not that I think you were directing this only at the guys that I know.

Also, while I don't consider myself an artist, I like to write sometimes. I go back and read the stuff I've written from time to time, and enjoy it. I think I'm a good writer. I don't read it and go like BOOYA I AM RAD

Yeah, you can look at your own pictures and know that they are good. I think admiring your own art is like watching your own movies. You can enjoy the final product, but it's different, because you made it. You know everything that went into it, you see it as that rather then some final whole.

I dunno.

You guys are totally taking it out of context of the topic though. The point of the topic is if people listen to their shit, let me quote
QUOTE
for entertainment

Of course a fucking artist or musician is going to review their work and perhaps critique/improve/whatever, BUT THAT'S NOT AT ALL WHAT THE TOPIC IS ABOUT.

I'm really peeved by people going back and forth but they're totally on two different levels.
