Fujifilm S5200, it's not compact but I just thought I'd point it out, really good value if you like something a little fancier.

I've heard a few good things about the S5200.

I have a Casio Exilim that I really like. At the time it was the only camera to have a huge LCD screen, but now I guess that's becoming standard. Canon is always a good bet as well.

I have to say I have never been disappointed by fujifilm cameras.

I picked up a Nikon Coolpix L3 and 2gb SD card for $150. Only complaint about the L3 is that you need a really steady hand for non-flash shots if you're inside, and flash recharge takes a few seconds too long.
