Finally got around to watching this. As far as Vietnam movies go I think it's my favorite, even over FMJ.
I watched the Redux version, which was like 3 hours. But I still liked it. All the original filiming was around 6 hours long.

Redux isn't really as good.
Apocalypse Now combined with Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse is an excellent combination.

I prefer FMJ, especially the second part.
The actors in Apocalypse Now were good but it was long and any movie that is basically Heart Of Darkness step for step wouldn't and didn't bode well with me.

I watched it for the first time last year in my english class, and using it along with Heart of Darkness I wrote one of the best papers I'd ever written in high school.

AN got kind of boring, and I didn't really like the whole ending with Marlon Brando.

I've had Redux for about half a year now and haven't watched it yet, I kind of want to get the other version.
I meant to watch it the other day, but forgot about it. So, thanks.

I actually got really bored with the movie once everyone on the boat died.

I thought the movie didn't actually pick up until Brando appeared.

At least no one has compared it to
Platoon yet.

I need to see platoon.
Hell, what other 'Nam movies are good? I heard The Deer Hunter is good from some people, but my mom said she walked out of the theater when she saw it...

Both are good. See them both.
Did she walk out because she thought it was a bad film, or because of the violence?

Casualties of War is a good one, to name one that hasn't been named yet. Most people would probably walk out of Deer Hunter in the "boring" segments, it's a really long movie with certain sequences like the dance that go on for long periods of time.

Eh, I don't know, she has good and bad tastes in things.

I just finished watching Deer Hunter, it was amazing, Takes about 40 minutes to pick up while it introduces the characters and all that, but it's pretty much necessary so you can see how they change.

I thought it was cool, an original adaptation of Heart of Darkness which is one of my favorite books and this did it justice in its own unique way.
...and I haven't seen the film since I was 11.

Yeah, The Deer Hunter is probably my favorite 'Nam movie.
Stay away from We Were Soldiers if you're going to watch some Vietnam war movies. Just a tip.

Deer Hunter was exceptionally long and exceptionally abrasive. I liked it cause it was bleak and disturbing, but by the end it was far too much.
Apoc Now is awesome, but the Redux adds stuff that takes away from the film. Not as bad as the LOTR extended editions, which have additions that are COMPLETE nonsense. Platoon is really killer. Apoc Now is better, but there ain't nothing bad to say about Platoon, except that Depp didn't have a big enough part.

What's this Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse movie? Is a documentary linking the two together? It sounds kind of interested, because I was in the same english class as Ender and fuckin loved both Hearts of Darkness and Apocalypse now...

I'm interested in that too, anyone have a torrent of it maybe?
I think the documentary is a behind-the-scenes for Apocalypse Now. I've heard it's more about the trials/tribulations behind the filmmaking process than anything else, but they might connect/compare the book and film, not sure.

Yeah it's a documentary on the making of the film. My high school film teacher had an old VHS of it and we got to watch a part of it.

Watched Platoon. I thought it was pretty decent. I just thought it a slightly in-depth action movie.
And thanks Don for the YT link.
