Like motors and...something?

I want to buy a 1998 Volkswagen Jetta and...everywhere I go online pretty much has the same one review that starts with "a wolf in sheep's clothing". I found one webpage of random user reviews but some were "fuck yeah this car rocks" and the other half were "this thing fell apart as soon as I pulled out of the parking lot".

Have you guys had one of these cars? Any tips on buying one...or...anything? I don't know. I just thought I'd ask here too, I like your opinions.

$20 says the first testimonial was some wigger who threw a kit and some 12's into it, and the 2nd was an older driver.

Anyways, you can't bang VW's up too much or else they will fall apart. Decent cars, but like most smaller sized cars, they sacrafice substance for fuel economy/etc.

funny story: My aunt and uncle were in Syracuse for this giant car show, but there was a flood, and they saw Corollas and Civics literally floating away on the water. They didn't have any issues, though, because they were in an SUV. And it wasn't even that deep...maybe a foot or less at the worst?

the GM plant in my town just eliminated the overnight shift. That's 1200 layoffs as of January 1st. You can't really do much, though, because GM would rather pay mexicans peanuts rather than Canadians $27.50+ an hour.

the REALLY sad thing is that these managers are still going to get their kids in their as students, making $27.50 an hour, while already having their parents pay for their education. it sickens me how greedy some people can be.

why's that? one of the many availible reasons, or a collection of several? i personally think many of their smaller cars are garbage. I.e. Cavalier, Sunfire, etc. Sure, they are cheap, but they fall apart like a house of cards.

hahaha i just realized i misused "their". i think i've done that 2 or 3 times in my entire life...

Most of GM's car cars suck and they really are greedy SOB's for hiring mexican labor. I don't like the way they view their employees as expendable and I don't like how they ruined parts of Michigan.

But my uncle works for em and I really do believe in buying domestic. I bought Ford over GM though because I didn't feel like waiting for a Camaro.

Mustang ftw

Mustangs suck. Even the shelbys. 500 horses, and it cant even keep up with a stock lower grade vette; putting it against the Z06 would just be a laugh. The new vettes are the best cars to come out in a long time, and the new CTS is the best caddy in years.

Anyways, jettas suck, and any foreign cars are usually more expensive to fix because the parts all have to be shipped. Unless you're getting a new car or some kind of warranty, i wouldnt recommend getting an old foreign car.

What else should I get? I want a square car. A tank, mother fucker.

Not when American labor creates inferior over priced products. There is a reason why the automotive industry is dying in America.

or maybe (I hope) youre just being sarcastic, it is a laughable position after all.

You just described my mom's old 1980s volvo. It was huge, square and like a tank.

The main reason it's "dying" (it isn't dying, it's just being beaten by japan) is because we import too many jap cars. they don't import any of ours, and that creates an imbalance in the markets. we have to compete with them, but they don't have to compete with us over there.

But why are we buying so many japanese cars over here?

whatever you like. balance that with whatever's in your price range, maybe something that's easy for you/your dad/etc to work on, so that you won't have to pay huge fees for minor repairs. If your dad is good with fords, get a ford. etc.

or you could just get a 94 civic hatchback, some 12's, and a spoiler, and you'd be gettin fli huneez in no time at all.

fixd

yeah its actually beena while ince Chevy has put out a decent car. GM as a whole is pretty shite, and as a result you can see how they've fallen as Toyota is now the largest auto company. but basically it comes down to this......chevy = shit, Cadillac alright but given how much you're paying for it, you might as well get a BMW or Merc Audi or really any other premium Euro car maker as they still set the bar and Cadillac still hasn't gottn near catching up. Buick = old person car+crap, Ford = shit except the focus, but really you should think of that more as a European car as it was conceived and designed in the UK I believe. GM actually has a brand in Europe called Opel (Vauxhall in the UK) whihc is actually decent. while its isn't any better than the other cars you can get in Europe they're far better than anything made on this side of the pond. A bright spot is probably Saturn, their new cars look to be rebadged Opel, except the suspension has probably been adjusted for our boring straight roads, and the styling has been made quite a bit blander so as not to offend our frightfully boring taste in terms of car design.

Japanese cars are generally as a rule better than American cars. the only half way decent american car is the corvette, and even then its cheaper than other cars in its class because the interior is frightfully cheap.
