Since 2004, the band had been working on the follow up to their 2003 release Wormwood. The band had debuted well over a dozen new songs since Wormwood, but had indicated in articles and interviews that there were some songs that they had recorded that they hadn't even performed live yet. As with the previous album, the band decided to try and record and then mix in live samples of their new songs from shows on June 10, 2005 and June 11, 2005 in order to create a meld between studio and live settings. The band performed these two special shows in Portland, Maine and recorded the audio for possible inclusion on the new album. For this reason, the band, usually taper friendly did not allow audio taping by the fans for these two shows.

They actually leased out the venue for a week or so. A vast majority of the album was recorded in Portland. There were the two nights of actual "shows," then about a week of them recording in an empty venue using the same setups. It makes for a very interesting sound.

I snagged it from Oink this afternoon. Best moe.album since No Doy, in my opinion.

I find it funny that this has caused such a stink with the scene. For whatever reason, the jam scene thinks they're somehow better than the rest of the music world, and shouldn't be exposed to such villainy as leaking unreleased albums.

To give you an example, I came right out and said that I downloaded the album, and didn't feel bad at all considering I paid for it in full already at musictoday.com. I bought a cd, now I'm listening to said cd, and yet people call me a thief and spit on my shoes. Never mind that I bought all their previous albums at shows (since it's damn near impossible to find a decent moe. selection in most record stores.) and paid probably twice what they did for the same albums...

On one hand I can respect their opinions, it is, in reality, still theft, since I'm not supposed to have it until January. On the other hand, I've bought tickets to eleven shows and spent countless amounts on stickers, shirts, and posters. If I want to listen to a cd that's available now, but I won't see my paid copy for another two months, I feel a bit of entitlement.

Those elitists have probably downloaded it, too, and if they haven't I bet they don't even buy it.

This isn't really what I expected, I didn't like it so much. Too much vocal work. I'm going to stick to their live jams as I have previously.
I think the only studio album of theirs I like is meat.
Brent Black
Yeah, a few songs, like the Road, could have benefited from a little extra jamming, but most of moe.'s albums are vocally oriented. I can only think of a few songs (meat., Time Ed, and Plane Crash to name a few) where they really went all out with the studio jams.

I thought the guitar work on Where Does the Time Go was pretty impressive, that was the first thing that jumped out at me as unique and more interesting than their live stuff. I got a big kick out of all the GW Bush samples turing Tailspin, also. The Pit is cool, although now I fear every setlist will say "Tubing the River Styx> The Pit" since they've been playing that intro since the beginning. (See also: every Jazz Wank> Buster> Jazz Wank from the mid-90s) Then again, I'm really digging the crowd vocals on Y Eaux, and would love to see a show where the band lets the crowd take over after Wind it Up. (I'm hitting the CD release party at the Fillmore in January, maybe then?....)

Live moe. will always be better than studio moe. That's just the nature of the beast when it comes to the jam scene, and its the reason I keep shelling out money and driving across the Midwest every few months to see them play. But as far as studio releases go, this is, in my opinion, one of their best. I only wish they'd left the Steeley Dan ripoff Blue Jeans Pizza off and included the McBain>George suite instead. And shit, when are we gonna get a studio Lazarus?

Hells yeah. Although I think with names like "Spaz Medicine" and "Brent Black" it would be a travesty if we didn't like this album. tongue.gif

This thing is still causing a stink at PT. Moderators have been deleting oink invite topics all day long, and keeping their eye on the countless discussions that have spawned as a result.

Funny thing: In one of the arguements about the morality of leak downloads, I sent 5 oink invites to the people that were most vocal against p2p, just to see what happened. I made no comment that the invites were being sent out or anything like that. All five accepted the invitation, and two of the five have already downloaded over a gigabyte of music each. Fucking hypocrits. laugh.gif

EDIT: I really think that's indicitive of the scene as a whole these days. Everyone gets hippied out for the shows, speaks love, peace, unity, all that good stuff, then turns into a tool like the rest of us once the show is over. it's kind of depressing, really, to think that the last bastion of decent human beings on this earth is just as fucked up as everyone else.
Kefka
I like it, I liiiike it. Not every song, obviously, but yeah.

I DL'd this last night before I went to bed but forgot I did until just now. Time to listen...

These replies really surprise me, especially Trog's. Just save me a spot on the rail (chuck.side) if they start getting more popular. laugh.gif

Having never heard a single moe. song I'm downloading this. Will listen to it later.
Paraphen
I listened to it a few times yesterday, it's pretty damn good. Nothing jumps out as being a particularly awesome song or anything, but of all the moe. albums I have, I like this one as an album most, rather than just for having one or two specific songs.

moe. will be playing song(s) from their upcoming album THE CONCH on Wednesday, January 3rd on Late Night with Conan O'Brien.

I'm almost certain it will be a vanilla version of Tailspin. BJP or the Pit would be a better choice, though. In any case, it won't even come close to hinting at how their live shows are, but hell, seeing the boys on network TV should be fun enough.

EDIT: Maybe they'll at least get a kick ass sitin like how Max did for DFA79
