Actually, I was pretty sure nobody wanted Bush back in office like three days before the election, but then I looked in a history book at the pictures of all the presidents at the end, and I just couldn't picture Kerry in there. So I knew Bush would get reelected.

Honestly, there is a combination of things (economy, wartime president, etc). But first and foremost, John Kerry was a horrible fucking candidate.

-Bush had white people scared of a terrorist attack.
-John Kerry is a douche.

Both elections were very tight. Kerry was rubbish.
The first election was supposedly rigged in Florida.

I think Wartime President is the biggest factor. If we hadn't been at war I doubt he would've gotten reelected.

Yah, Americans probably though that since Bush pulled the US into war, he should be the person who cleans it up.
Here's an interesting graph of Bush's Approval Rating

Because Iraq looked like it was on the up-and-up.
We were wrong.

Several reasons, few of them good.
1. We were in the middle of a war, and Bush was the incumbent President, meaning he wouldn't have to catch up on the current Iraq strategy like Kerry would.
2. John Kerry was probably the worst possible candidate that the Democrats could have selected.
3. Much like Nixon and Kennedy, despite the fact that Kerry handed Bush's ass to him during the presidential debates, Bush looked better while on the defensive than Kerry looked on the offensive.
4. Almost nobody liked either major candidate, Americans aren't revolutionary enough to vote third party, and Bush was the devil we knew.
5. During the Vice Presidential debates, during a discussion about gay marriage, John Edwards brought up Dick Cheney's lesbian daughter, which many Americans viewed as in bad taste. This really put the brakes on any momentum Kerry had for a while.
6. Let's not lie to ourselves...John Kerry looked like Franksentein's monster and John Edwards looked like some kind of creepy child molesting Robin to John Kerry's decrepit, old-school pervert Batman, and Americans are shallow enough for that to matter.
