I have a 512 in my laptop right now and id like to go up to 1 gig. I've swtiched the RAM in desktop computers before but never my laptop. Is there anything I should know thats different?

It's really not that much different, just looks different and lays flat. It's usually held in by a clip. Undo the clip, and the ram will slant upwards, allowing you to change it out. The slot to change it is usually underneath the laptop. You'll probably have to unscrew a lid to get at it.

It's also more expensive by a lot. Make sure (like all ram) that you get the right speed, and that your mobo supports however much you're trying to get. BestBuy had a gig stick for like $60 a couple of weeks ago, too bad.
