Is I get a computer with Vista, is there any reason I wouldn't be able to go back to XP?

As long as the manufacturer of your PC has drivers which support Windows XP you won't have a problem. For most brands it'll be alright, I had a bit of trouble getting together Windows XP drivers for my new Asus notebook though..

As Morm said, some of the drivers may be an issue if it's a newer notebook. If it's a desktop, the drivers should be no issue, as the manufacturer most likely has XP counterparts to it's Vista drivers.

Do a little research first--check out the chipsets and make sure drivers are available for things.

The dirty hippie in me suggests that you check for F/OSS compatibility too. One never knows these days--and besides, there's no better guarantee that you'll be able to use the stuff in your computer than for it to be well-documented.
