18 With a Bullet
Since my car is shit (230k+ miles on it, and only like 5k of them are me, woot.), I've decided I'm just going to buy a bike to ride to work/maybe school.

Any tips on what to get? I'm bigger than your average person, 6'1 220lbs, so yeah. And how much am I looking to spend?

What type of bike do you want?

One that I can ride.

Depends somewhat on the terrain you're going to be travelling to get to work/school. Also, going into winter is not really the best time to start biking, but you may get one for cheaper. Especially if it's secondhand.

Brands don't come into play nearly as much for the casual rider as whether it's a mountain/street/bmx/etc bike. I imagine you'll probably want a street bike (touring?), which is pretty light and quick, requiring minimal effort unless you're going up a really steep hill. I don't really know the types very well, I'd just keep an eye out for garage/yard sales, whatever your area's equivalent of the Pennysaver or Craig's list is, maybe newspaper ads, etc. You can probably grab a pretty good one for under fifty bucks. Wear a helmet. And take it for a test ride before you buy it.
