I used to be fanatically obsessed with keeping my books in pristine, like new condition, including the dust jackets. Now I don't know why I ever bothered. Life is so much simpler without them.

Well, I've never bought a hardback new. So if it comes without a jacket that's fine. If it comes with one I don't throw it away or mess it up, but if it gets messed up I don't really care.
I usually do prefer for them to not have the jacket, but I have never gotten rid of one.

I read the books without them and then put them back on when they return to the shelf.

Same here. They annoy me, but the book seems naked without 'em.
