I was admitted this morning with complications from Crohn's disease. Weakness, dehydration, blood in stool and other fun things.

The nice part is Pediatrics goes up to age 21, so I have a nice N64 in my room and can play some Diddy Kong Racing. And they have laptops. And in the "Lounge" they have a huge plasma and a PS2. It would be great if only I didn't have to constantly have an IV in me.

Damn. Good luck with that and get better I guess.

Bummer about the disease. Have you had any part removed?

Damn John that really sucks. Hoping for the best for you man. All of us are.

If you die, can I have your video games?

Oh, man, I had no idea you had Crohn's. My best friend had ulcerative colitis, which was thankfully cured. There was a really scary time right before the operation where they thought he might have Crohn's, but the symptom was actually caused by his Prednizone. Hang in there, dude.

So...quick description of what this disease is would be nice.

Crohn's disease (also known as regional enteritis) is a chronic, episodic, inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract characterized by transmural inflammation (affecting the entire wall of the involved bowel) and skip lesions (areas of inflammation with areas of normal lining in between). Crohn's disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and may sometimes affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract from mouth to anus; as a result, the symptoms of Crohn's disease can vary between affected individuals. The main gastrointestinal symptoms are abdominal pain, diarrhea (which may be bloody), and weight loss. Crohn's disease can also cause complications outside of the gastrointestinal tract such as skin rashes, arthritis, and inflammation of the eye.[1]

Crohn's disease affects between 400,000 and 600,000 people in North America.[2] Prevalence estimates for Northern Europe have ranged from 27–48 per 100,000.[3] Crohn's disease often develops in the teenage years, though individuals in their 60s and 70s are also at increased risk.[1][4] There is a genetic component to susceptibility with highest relative risk in siblings, affecting males and females equally.

Although the cause of Crohn's disease is not known, it is widely believed to be an autoimmune disease. The condition occurs when the immune system contributes to damage of the gastrointestinal tract by causing inflammation. Many cytokines in the Th1 classification, including TNF-α, interleukin-2, and interferon γ are elevated in Crohn's disease, and are involved in mediating the inflammation.[5] [6]

Unlike the other major type of IBD, ulcerative colitis, there is no known medical or surgical cure for Crohn's disease.[7] Instead, a number of medical treatments are utilized with the goal of putting and keeping the disease in remission. These include steroid medications, immunomodulators (such as azathioprine and methotrexate), and newer biological medications, such as infliximab.[8]

The disease was named after Burrill Bernard Crohn, an American gastroenterologist. In 1932, Crohn and two colleagues first described a series of patients with inflammation of the terminal ileum, the area most commonly affected in Crohn's disease.[9]

Wiki summary.

I've actually had the topic title's exchange before.

It was worse though because my brother said in a deep voice when I was in some drugged delusional state "You are dead, Adam. You are dead." and I fell asleep after that and thought I was dead for the better part of the day.

I love the guy, though. smile.gif

Btw: Good luck on your butt problem.

When I had spinal surgery 5-6 years back (damn, that reminds me..it's been a while now o_O) I whored the fuck out of the aisle's n64 to play Banjo-Kazooie. Completed the damn thing over the course of my 1-week stay, jigsaw collection and all. Man that game was infuriating.

Anyway, what is it with hospitals and nintendo 64 consoles? O_O

They're poor.

I was in the hospital for what they thought was Chron's almost a week ago, it was terrible...it ended up being some nasty liver virus. I got my first rectal exam, and the lady who did it must have been cracked out becaused she didn't make my friends who brought me to the ER leave the room when she did it, no matter how much I begged her to make them go. Then they made me stay overnight in the ER of all damn places on a bed that was too short for me with an IV in my arm. I hate IVs so much...I never realized how annoying they are, just sitting there making you unable to really use your arm, making it cold and numb, and then how scary it is the first time your blood drains into it when its empty and you don't realize that's what is supposed to happen.

Hospitals...I used to think they would be so fun to just hole up in when you are sick, until I realized getting better from actual serious things is like making money...you gotta feel pain to make it go away.

I have Crohn's. Damn near killed me and I damn near killed myself a few times afterwards. Completely awful shit. Surprisingly it hasn't come back yet. Hopefully it never will.

What meds do they have/want you on? Remicade(sp?) is going to kill you if you like IVs. 6MP needs lots of blood draws, too. About nine months after I first got sick and had my ostomy reversed I told them to go fuck themselves and stopped taking everything. I don't really recommend that >.>

Holy fuck. this thread made me really sad.
Crohn's fucking blows (even though you clearly know that.)
Best of luck and best wishes.

I'm taking Pentasa and Mercaptopurine, which are fine because they're pills. They also have me on a couple IV antibiotics and iron. The doctor just told me I may need a blood transfusion.

It's really hard to type with one hand.

I was taking Pentasa along with everything else. Can't remember anything special about it or not. Mercaptopurine/Purinethol is 6MP.
