QUOTE
In the wake of radio host Don Imus' firing over racially insensitive comments about the Rutgers women's basketball team, many activists in the black community have turned their attention to rap's misogynistic lyrics and begun to question what steps the music industry should take to police itself.

Now, Russell Simmons and Dr. Benjamin Chavis, on behalf of the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network, have issued a recommendation that the recording and broadcast industries voluntarily censor the "misogynistic" words "bitch and "ho" and the "racially offensive" word "n*gger" from future recordings.

"We recommend the formation of a music industry Coalition on Broadcast Standards, consisting of leading executives from music, radio and television industries," the HHSAN statement continues. "The Coalition would recommend guidelines for lyrical and visual standards within the industries. We also recommend that the recording industry establish artist mentoring programs and forums to stimulate effective dialogue between artists, hip-hop fans, industry leaders and others to promote better understanding and positive change."

Some rap artists believe the issue is being taken out of context. "I call women 'hos' in my music but that doesn't mean I'm trying to degrade someone. That's just the way we talk," female rapper Remy Ma tells Billboard.com. "I think 'Pac said it best: once you take the power away from the word, it doesn't mean the same thing."

I pretty much agree with Simmons on this one. Regardless of what many rappers feel, the youth listening to music are getting a different message.

You have to be fucking kidding me.

For someone seemingly close to the scene, Simmons sure is disconnected.

So that takes care of the mainstream, commercial hip-hop. Super. What about the rest of the scene? What about local MCs, DJs and mix-tapes that constitute the foundation of the scene in the first place? Hip-hop is a direct result of the culture, censoring a few words doesn't change a thing.

This whole idea is simply idiotic.

I think the main point of what Simmons is suggesting is to censor the stop the more impressonable people (the youth) would be hearing.

Imposing lyrical and visual standards for songs and vidoes is borderline wrong I think, but at the same time I'd love to not have to hear bitch, ho, and nigger tossed around every other word.

So would anyone, Oro - but censorship is not the answer, which is the point of why I think Simmons is being an idiot.

The moment you censor something due to being "sensitive" to one group or another, that's when the wave of demands comes in for everything else. Changing the way the hip-hop culture thinks does not require censorship, it requires action outside of the mainstream media to suppress gang culture so it doesn't leave an impression on youth that all of these words and mentalities don't repeat themselves.

The point I was trying to make is basically that this stuff is already out there. Let's say this comes to fruition and starting tomorrow, sensitive words are cut out of major releases. Now you have new releases with blank spots in the vocals where these words are supposed to sit, according to Simmons' suggestion of voluntary censorship by the labels. Not only is pretty much everybody going to know exactly which words belong at the blank spots, but the entire thing becomes comical to the point where people are still going to seek out the stuff with questionable content, since the content is still there, they just aren't being allowed to hear it. His first step is eliminating the words, the second step is educating rappers. That means the content of these releases won't change anytime soon, only the content this 'coalition' thinks you should be subjected to. It will be obvious for some time that the real shit is still sitting out there somewhere, whether its in a DJ's record crate or a bootleg somewhere.

The only thing I can see this preventing is people outside the world of hip-hop from having any more bullets to load in their gun when they're firing at the rap community to clean up their act.
Mr. Mojo Risin'
They should just get rid of hip hop and rap all together.
Orbital

Of course. "Wonder Why They Call You Bitch" pretty much set him in stone as an expert.

Hey dickheads.

Russ is speaking about clean records. Records that are already censored. He's trying to make an official list of words that would be censored on records deemed "clean."

Get the fuck with it, peep the context. Russell Simmons is the shit.

Where in the hell does that article mention clean records? Also - the fact that he wants to impose visual standards is pretty shitty too.

It helps when the reporter actually writes about what's happening without being totally vague.

Yea I don't think this will work at all. Not enough other people seem to be on his train. It may work in say five or ten years, but not the immediate future.
