I was gonna make a topic about this album, but then I noticed this one, since it seemed hard to believe with this crowd that it hadn't been brought up yet. Here's what I was going to post there:
---
I'm an old school NIN freak. Broken and Pretty Hate Machine are some of my favorite albums. The Downward Spiral was way too pretentious for my tastes, although the remix album was pretty sweet. The Fragile made me weep and I swore off the 'band.' I haven't heard a single beat from With Teeth, and I have no desire to do so.
After hearing about the 'concept' behind Year Zero, I just had to download it and give it a listen. I'm trying to be as open minded about this as I possibly can.
Trip report:
1: Not terrible, but not very good. Kind of reminds me a bit of the opening to Broken, only more obvious.
2: Utterly forgettable. Sounds like a great radio hit.

3: What the fuck is this? The chorus is a goddamn train wreck.
4: Wait, is this the "Closer" beat? You're telling me in thirteen years you can't find a better "gritty industrial clap" soundfont? The melody near the end sounds like a Depeche Mode sit-in.
5: Nice beat. I kinda like this song, actually. Wait, never mind, the chorus just kicked in. The noise about 3:30 in is kinda cool. I wonder if I can crop the middle out...
6: Nice vocals, queer. Jesus. Do you grab your balls like Michael Jackson, too? Another Depeche Mode sit-in sighted. Three minutes in and I can't take this song anymore...skipping the rest.
7: Oh dear fucking god what in the hell is this shit? Is he trying to rap or something? SKIPPING
8: Fuck, I'm only halfway done with this CD. I give up. I tried, I really did. You're still dead to me, NIN. What a shame. Those first few albums were incredible. I guess you really hit the nail on the head with your press release for Broken:
QUOTE
Broken was a hard recording to make
Broken is an ugly record made during an ugly time in my life
Broken marks phase three of nine inch nails: the becoming
I am starting to realize what this is all about
and I don't like it
Should have just quit when you saw the writing on the wall.
