I try to load Word and it takes years to load (actually like half an hour). But all the other office programs like Excel and Powerpoint work fine.

The thing is it's not loading, like the working light isn't on. But it just dosn't show. I've already tried uninstalling it and re-installing it and it still does the same thing over and over. Anyone have any idea what's going on?

Do a search for a file called 'normal.dot' and rename all the instances to something like 'oldnormal.dot' Then reopen Word and the program will rebuild the default template.

A big chunk of Word's problems arise from a bad document template, and the file may not have been replaced when you reinstalled it. I'd start there.

Dude, you are a computer God. Thank you so much. This was bothering me for the longest time.

Err, now I have a slight problem. It works and all, but when I restart my computer, it does the whole not loading thing again. I go to rename the file again and there's two files: normal.dot and oldnormal.dot.

I try to load up Word and the problem persists. Whats going on?
Brent Black
Hmm, that's a bit of a doozie.

You can actually delete the oldnormal.dot files. That's just a precautionary measure. Word looks for normal.dot and if it can't find it, it makes it again. The oldnormal.dot was just in case for some reason Word couldn't create the new normal template. Since Word seems to rebuild at least some form of normal.dot, you can try deleting them all and going from there. But that may just replicate your problem down the road.

My initial thought is that there may be something fishy going on that's somehow attached to the COM components or something like that. A few questions...

If you right click on your desktop and move the mouse over "New >" does it lag a lot before opening that window?

Have you run a spyware scan lately? And if so, are you using a weaker scanner like SpyBot or AdAware or are you using bad boys like HijackThis and Ewido/AVG?

It kinda lags about half a secondish when mouse over New ->.

I did run a spyware scan recently. So I guess AdAware won't cut it huh.
