Looks like your kinda list, Logik.
They're missing Kawabata.
Nice to see Matt Pike get some deserved recognition from larger media. Kaki King is a guitar god, though?
!LLF!
Anyone who thinks John Mayer shouldn't be on that list is a tool, he's pretty fucking good. Far better guitarist than songwriter.

Yeah I don't know about her. She should have been replaced with Jimmy Herring, then I'd be a happy camper. smile.gif

Tom Morello? Ugh. All of his new guitar work in Audioslave is complete shit. Frusciante is really good, though.

Hey, I didn't say he wasn't good, I just never would have thought to put him on one of these lists. Jeez, guys.

I didn't know what you meant. Mayer videos can never hurt, though.

btw I dug the vibe of that alife session.

And what's up with his guitar neck? I've never seen a finish like that on the fretboard.

EDIT: Nevermind, I didn't notice the 8 strings at first.

I was wondering about that, too. The way the frets are slanted in both directions leads me to believe there's certain parts of the guitar that are naturally out of tune, but I don't know much about guitars, so I'm just talking out my ass. That's how it seems, at least.

In any case, an aesthetically attractive axe, to say the least.

It's too bad Rolling Stone will never, ever listen to heavy metal.

Hey, we all have our own biases, my hippie friend, but if Rolling Stone actually bothered to know names such as Li, Petrucci, Wylde, Romeo and others, they might expand their horizons past the crack of Bob Dylan's ass a little bit.

because those are such obscure names right?

Anyway, good to see Mayer and Matt Pike on there, I don't even know half of the other list because I'm not a hippie.

Rolling Stone's list of 100 greatest guitarists is a crime against humanity.

Someone's gonna need to explain to me how Jack White is like 50 slots higher than David Gilmour.

Muuuuuch love. These two represent some of the most talented guitarists of our time and will imo go down in music history as such.

Well if he were, do you think Tom Morello would still be on the list? laugh.gif

In all seriousness, the guy is fairly respected in the music business. He's written liner notes for a number of prominent bands, like Nirvana, the Violent Femmes, the Ramones, and Velvet Underground. (Yay internet searches)

Then again, he called Phish the most important band of the 90s, so take that for what you will. I'm a fan of the band and even I wouldn't go that far.

Jack White? If I recall the only White Stripes songs I have heard, they weren't hard at ALL.

Rolling Stone's got obvious biases for a few bands. Bob Dylan and the Red Hot Chili Peppers most of all but the White Stripes are another.

Two thumbs up on Petrucci. The guy is a true god.

I don't know your definition of "hard," but I'm a big Stripes fan and I can tell you he can really play. He's got an awesome grungy sound combined with some kickass playing.

EDIT: Here is a decent video of him playing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkrzs_mBisQ

It's all name dropping to sell issues. They kinda suck in that regard. Given that and the fact that the writer seemingly jizzes all over Phish, I'm surprised Trey didn't make it over NMAS or MMJ. They have some good stuff here and there, though. I really like their articles on politics and stuff.

White Stripes are definitely rock music.
Elucidarius
I'm assuming by hard he means not difficult to play.

TO Bob if he means what I think: I don't think the writers go by difficulty of songs made though, this isn't guitar heroes or anything. It's more of how well they can make their music.

Good point. My brain is soup tonight.
Svyatogornyj
I was thinking earlier that someone like Jack Rose or James Blackshaw really should've made the list. Their music is gaining a lot of popularity with people nowadays and since this is their list of "new" guitar gods, it wouldn't make sense to put John Fahey, Robbie Basho, Peter Walker, etc. but it would make sense to put a person who sort of carries on what they've accomplished.
But it is Rolling Stone after all. Feh.
Rob
What is this, india? Why are there so many gods?

No, I meant difficult. To me, a good guitar player is someone who knows their way around a guitar, can formulate great solos or chord progressions, and/or can play technical stuff.

The solo was pretty nice, but I still wouldn't label him a "god", just a good guitarist.

EDIT: To reinforce what I think a guitar hero is, I will cite Brian May of Queen. I mean, in some Queen songs, he barely played (Somebody to Love is an example), but when he did come in, he did fantastic solos that fit right into the song. They weren't even the MOST difficult solos (albeit, still hard), but due to his ability to fit his solos PERFECTLY into a song, I consider Brian May a guitar "god", or whatever you want to call it.

Brian May isn't a guitarist, he's an astrophysicist.
