Gaming as in at least 1024 mb RAM, and a capable card.
And I know (or think) I can hook up a keyboard/mouse to one, but when the need/want arises can I hook up a real monitor to it?

A gaming laptop is an oxymoron.

My friend got an Alienware laptop for gaming. He's content.

As someone who bought one, don't. Get a teeny little laptop and a desktop for the same price, and enjoy like twice the lasting power and utility for both of them.

Gaming laptop? Gaming, as in, Hearts, Minesweeper (you need an external, normal mouse for this though), Icy Tower, HoboSoccer, Bejeweled et al?
They work fine on just about any laptop.
