It recently had a HUGE surge in popularity, it seems. I like to see dudes kicking the shit out of eachohter too, but it seems whenever I turn on some UFC it's all mat shit. It's not even exciting.

Some of the fights are cool, but I agree about the grappling shit being beyond boring. It's not so much a gay thing, unless you're a sadist...some of the fighters are attractive before they start hitting people.

For me it USED to be the fact that there are no rules, therefore anyone who practices any discipline would be able to compete.
As a martial artist of varied experience I always hated people showing off that they do "flowery" and utterly useless martial arts (e.g. tae kwan do). UFC would show these arts up for the shit they are.
For some reason, a person just doesnt get the idea that if he tries to kick me in the head, my fist is gonna hit his jaw first.
NOW UFC is complete bollocks hemmed in by zillions of rules and ROUNDS for fucks sake. The idea was just to fight, they may as well be boxing.

I enjoy UFC for the most part. I totally agree when they go to the mat its beyond boring and becomes extremely homosexual.
There have been a few matches though where the fighters will just go toe to fucking toe the entire time throwing massive punches of all variety. Those are my personal favorite matches. I wish there was a division that had rules against going to the mat.
Then again some of the mat moves are impressive, but alot of the time its just straddling each other until you can get position and it basically just looks like they are laying there on top of each other. When a submission is actually locked on though, which sometimes doesn't happen or takes an entire match to happen, its nice to see how long they can last before tapping out.

The rounds as well as most of the rules are for legal reasons. The UFC wouldn't have them if they could get away with them.
Anyways. If you want to see two half naked dudes hitting each other to the point of knock out, watch a boxing match. Without having to worry about ground work you see a much more skillful bout of punching.

Yeah, that. I like the fighters that beat each other senseless, but the submissions are just boring to me. I know it takes skill for either style, but knockout is definitely more entertaining. Too bad most people in UFC are submission fighters.

I dont think you guys really understand grappling and whats going on when theyre on the ground "being gay." I'll bet you guys probably think Royce Gracie, if you even know who he is, is being gay when he takes his opponent down and doenst let them up. I used to too, but thats because i didnt really understand what it is thats going on down there. It's a whole different type of fight on the ground, but i guess its just not for everybody. Illegal probably isn't the best word, but yes. Various state fighting commissions, Navada's being the most important, would not sanction the fights unless they were deemed "safe". Without sanctioning they wouldn't have a place to fight. There were also troubles with getting airtime on the PPV events but I can't remember why.
It was only a few months back before the California state fighting commission re-allowed MMA fights.
In places where they can get away with less rules, like Japan, they have less rules. Pride's head kicking on the ground comes to mind

Groundwork is something that is hugely technical but not apparently physically impressive. Since the act of watching it is not inherently enjoyable for most people, you kinda have to know what goes into it to enjoy it. Kinda like how my engineering buddy gets his jollies looking at the technical aspects of Nerf guns, or whatever.

I guess you have to care more about the fighting styles to enjoy the groundfighting. I just think it's cool to see big brawny guys punch each other in the head and shit, so I'm probably not the target demo. and yes, I've heard of boxing, but I think it's fucking boring most of the time. Im not saying understanding whats happening on the ground is going to automatically make you enjoy everything, but it might help a lot of people. Like i said, i used to think that grappling was incredibly boring as well, but that was before i knew what was happening. I still perfer watching Liddell KO guys, but im also a huge fan of watching Royce Gracie take out a guy thats like, 2 or 3 times his own weight on the ground.
