Full Version: What is so enthralling about UFC?

Trogdor the Burninator
It recently had a HUGE surge in popularity, it seems. I like to see dudes kicking the shit out of eachohter too, but it seems whenever I turn on some UFC it's all mat shit. It's not even exciting.
Scorched Earth Policy
because it (supposedly) isn't fake

I've seen a few decent matches, my buddy's a big fan, but it's pretty much just another excuse for dudes to sit around and watch other dudes play grabass while still insisting they aren't gay.

Why not just get some gay porn? Tonight's PPV costs 40 bucks, highway robbery.
Paul MC Hurt Meh
I don't get wrestling/judo karate kickboxing shows. Always bored me. Or made me laugh.
FuckChrist
I'd never pay for it, but I enjoy watching any sport/event that is in a highly competitive atmosphere. Fighting can be pretty competitive.
!LLF!
I like watching the knockouts, that's about it. Some of those guys get fucked up.
enKrypt
I like to watch certain fighters.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forrest_Griff..._Stephan_Bonnar

The first Forrest Griffin vs Stephan Bonnar fight was insane. They beat the fuck out of each other for 3 rounds and neither one gave up. That is why people watch the UFC, for the chance to see something like that.

That would make it pretty hard to pretend they're not gay, eh? tongue.gif

His name was Bonnar....

IT'S MANLY AND...MANLY.

Some of the fights are cool, but I agree about the grappling shit being beyond boring. It's not so much a gay thing, unless you're a sadist...some of the fighters are attractive before they start hitting people.
Count Knobula
For me it USED to be the fact that there are no rules, therefore anyone who practices any discipline would be able to compete.

As a martial artist of varied experience I always hated people showing off that they do "flowery" and utterly useless martial arts (e.g. tae kwan do). UFC would show these arts up for the shit they are.

For some reason, a person just doesnt get the idea that if he tries to kick me in the head, my fist is gonna hit his jaw first.

NOW UFC is complete bollocks hemmed in by zillions of rules and ROUNDS for fucks sake. The idea was just to fight, they may as well be boxing.

It's about as cool as hardcore dancing.

I enjoy UFC for the most part. I totally agree when they go to the mat its beyond boring and becomes extremely homosexual.

There have been a few matches though where the fighters will just go toe to fucking toe the entire time throwing massive punches of all variety. Those are my personal favorite matches. I wish there was a division that had rules against going to the mat.

Then again some of the mat moves are impressive, but alot of the time its just straddling each other until you can get position and it basically just looks like they are laying there on top of each other. When a submission is actually locked on though, which sometimes doesn't happen or takes an entire match to happen, its nice to see how long they can last before tapping out.

Learn how to wrestle, judo, karate, kickbox, etc. Once you know how, you can maybe appreciate it.

There isn't much that's more competitive than fighting.

I meant to quote Knobs here but whatever. I am beyond drunk.

The rounds as well as most of the rules are for legal reasons. The UFC wouldn't have them if they could get away with them.

Anyways. If you want to see two half naked dudes hitting each other to the point of knock out, watch a boxing match. Without having to worry about ground work you see a much more skillful bout of punching.
BL0TT0
Just hung out at a bar, and watched it for free! Yeah, paid 1.50 for endless pepsi...but still was a good deal.
Svyatogornyj
I don't get it, either. I think it's pretty boring.
Obviously the really intense parts are cool but I'm not one of those people that will watch a match just hoping the two guys might go nuts on each other without hitting the mats.
Scorched Earth Policy
when they are trading blows it is pretty cool but when they are grappling it is beyond gay and they mostly grapple in the UFC

Yeah, that. I like the fighters that beat each other senseless, but the submissions are just boring to me. I know it takes skill for either style, but knockout is definitely more entertaining. Too bad most people in UFC are submission fighters.

Ground work is just as strategic as when they're standing. It's kind of a matter of knowing what to look for, I think.

Are you saying that it was illegal back in the old days?
Ænima
I dont think you guys really understand grappling and whats going on when theyre on the ground "being gay." I'll bet you guys probably think Royce Gracie, if you even know who he is, is being gay when he takes his opponent down and doenst let them up. I used to too, but thats because i didnt really understand what it is thats going on down there. It's a whole different type of fight on the ground, but i guess its just not for everybody. It's (grappling) changed fighting though, thats for sure.
Count Knobula
I was Gracie's biggest fan back in the day. A genius.

I will say one thing, grappling can get boring. UFC 5 "superfight" can be a testament to that.
Usurper
I don't find grappling boring at all. It's entertaining seeing them use all of their strength in such a struggle. What's so enthralling about UFC? It's just fucking violence. Can I enjoy violence in peace?
Trogdor the Burninator
I don't give a fuck about the technical aspect to mat wrestling or grappling, I want to see dudes pummeled into the ground if I watch some UFC.
Dagger Jane
Nate's mom watches UFC. lol.

You might as well just watch WWE where you get racist stereotypes like Cryme Time and ridiculous gimmicks to spice things up.

lol @ Cryme Time

And do you really have to know all the details of the matfighting to like or dislike it? I don't know much about how diarrhea works but I know it's shitty (pun initially unintended).

Illegal probably isn't the best word, but yes. Various state fighting commissions, Navada's being the most important, would not sanction the fights unless they were deemed "safe". Without sanctioning they wouldn't have a place to fight. There were also troubles with getting airtime on the PPV events but I can't remember why.

It was only a few months back before the California state fighting commission re-allowed MMA fights.

In places where they can get away with less rules, like Japan, they have less rules. Pride's head kicking on the ground comes to mind

See, some rules are good. Not being allowed to kick the downed fighter in the head probably fits into that category.

Groundwork is something that is hugely technical but not apparently physically impressive. Since the act of watching it is not inherently enjoyable for most people, you kinda have to know what goes into it to enjoy it. Kinda like how my engineering buddy gets his jollies looking at the technical aspects of Nerf guns, or whatever.

I guess you have to care more about the fighting styles to enjoy the groundfighting. I just think it's cool to see big brawny guys punch each other in the head and shit, so I'm probably not the target demo. and yes, I've heard of boxing, but I think it's fucking boring most of the time. Especially when they get tired and start hugging.

I understand the skill it takes, it's just boring to watch. It's like prog metal...sure, they may be able to play their instruments really well, but that doesn't stop it from boring people to sleep.

It's probably not good for the guy being kicked, but damned if it isn't entertaining. It probably wasn't good for Sony Liston to get his ass stomped by Muhammad Ali, either, but damned if it isn't one of the most famous photos in professional boxing history for the same reason.

Boxing used to be fun to watch when there were decent fighters. There hasnt been any decent fighers in ages imo and I only ever enjoy the heavyweight division in boxing.

As far as K-1 or Pride. Im just not a huge fan of them, I dunno why Im just not.

And to the guy who is saying you have to know what is going on in mat wrestling for it to be enjoyable, that really is a personal opinion. I know exactly what they are doing on the mat and the moves for that matter. It is just beyond boring when they hit the mat and struggle to get a hold for an entire round. Thats not fun to watch at all, I don't care what anyone says.

Im not saying understanding whats happening on the ground is going to automatically make you enjoy everything, but it might help a lot of people. Like i said, i used to think that grappling was incredibly boring as well, but that was before i knew what was happening. I still perfer watching Liddell KO guys, but im also a huge fan of watching Royce Gracie take out a guy thats like, 2 or 3 times his own weight on the ground.
Trogdor the Burninator
Ok, I decided that UFC is alright, after watching it on Spike on New Years. After seeing Anderson Silva knock that dude out in like a minute less, that was bomb.
Ænima
It grows on you. You gotta give it a chance. Its our generation's boxing.
