Alrighty, i've noticed the huge savings one could attain from buying cigarettes online, paying around $18 for a carton of cigarettes with shipping vs $50-$60 a carton. It sounds almost too good though, so is it illegal? I've heard of people getting nabbed for it, but I know someone who's been doing it for years without a problem. I was under the assumption that as long as you don't do something asinine like trying to sell them for a profit you should be ok, but I was wondering if I was wrong, anybody know anything on the subject?

My mother's been buying her smokes online for years. It's illegal to sell them if you're in the U.S., but it's legal to buy them. (Most of those sites, at least the ones in America, are run by Indian reservations which have their own laws on such things.)

Why is it illegal to sell them online in the US?

I'm pretty sure you need a license, plus it's way too easy for minors to get them.

It seems like it would be easier to gank them from a corner store or get an adult to buy them, than to somehow acquire a credit card and order them from the internet.

I think it has more to do with state taxes and minimum pricing that vary from state to state than it does minors getting ahold of them. I think in general the attitude toward trying to stop minors from getting smokes has dissapeared and instead been replaced with the much less idealistic concept of trying to just sway them away from buying them at all.

If ii'm 20, living in the state of NJ, and buy them online and don't intent on selling them to anyone else for a profit, it's all kosher then?

you can get busted for not paying your states taxes if you buy them online, but it's fairly rare.

Well Delaware has no taxes, so that's pretty easy.

Actually some states have for some ungodly reason have been able to raise the age to buy cigarettes including NJ, something that makes about as much sense to me as the drinking age being 21.
