I know nothing about the insides of a computer, but I need a laptop for work, I saw this ad in a newsletter for my local computer store, and I want to know if this is a good deal or not. I don't need a super computer to play WoW or anything, but I'd like to have like...a bittorrent program open, along with itunes and MSN and firefox without having it super lagging like the one im using right now.

IBM T23 P3 1.13GHz Laptop
Intel Pentium III - 1.13GHz
128 Megs RAM
30 Gig hard drive
CD-ROM drive
14" TFT LCD Screen
Windows 2000 Pro
$299.99 CAN ($258.23 American)

If it's a new system, it doesn't look bad. It would look better with 256MB RAM, and you'd notice less slowdown, but Win2k isn't super-bloated like XP, so it should run fine.
Rob
Oh yeah, and a 90 day warentee. Isn't that a little...short? Or am I just used to like...2-year warentees from other stuff.
Orbital
i think it's crap...pentium 3, sdram, OLD integrated graphics which will cut in to your ram even more, etc :/
Rob
I don't even know what that means!
Orbital
well it's like a 5 generation old cpu and it's slow and it probably runs hot and will eat up your battery but i dunno about that
old and slow ram
old and shitty graphics which dont have their own video memory and will use some of your system memory

i mean you could spend 4 times as much and get a computer that's like 30 times better :/

maybe look on ebay for used laptops? you could probably find one better for the same amount of money.
Rob
Awesome, well okay, I wont get this laptop, but I still don't even know what to look for on ebay.
Codeman
It's a decent setup for average gaming. But before you set out on that I would defiantly invest in some ram sticks.
Bolt
you can get a T40 for around 300 american on ebay
Rob
I think there might be an understanding, there will be no gaming on this computer. I need no good graphics card or anytrhing like that.
Brent Black
8MB of shared RAM will run the GUI for Win2k no problem, I wouldn't worry about the integrated graphics too much.

Yeah, it's not the best deal, but if it's new, then at least you have a certain peace of mind that you probably wouldn't get from eBay. And P3s never really ran hot, especially the 133 models. There's only about a 1/3rd inch square on a late P3 that gets hot. 370 -> 478 was when Intel brought massive heat into the equation.

For normal use (i.e. Web browsing, word processing, etc.) that system will perform just fine. You may see slowdown if you use a hefty BT client like Azerus or try to run more modern Flash files.

Personally, I'd take the warranty and new hardware over getting something better over eBay, especially with a notebook, but that's just me.
Rob
Haha...I use Azerus. Damn. Does anywhere have really cheap deals, like a real webpage I should check out? Dell? Best Buy?

slickdeals.net

every once in awhile you'll see a good deal on laptops and stuff
Quaoar
Just use another BT client, burst! works great, I don't THINK it's very intensive as it's relatively bare, but it does the job.

www.pricewatch.com generally doesn't let me down, although you will see a listing for EVERYTHING, like, from companies you've NEVER heard of, and never will. So caution may be necessary.
Mormegil
Great site for older hardware: http://www.retrobox.com
Master Bob
utorrent is a better lightweight client.
The Clown
Look for something a bit newer. Something that takes DDR RAM and has at least a Pentium 4.
Spammit
thats not gonna play WoW btw
